2. Django Unchained (2012)

Django Unchained Review

Django Unchained hails fruitful at our number two position, and evidently digs deeper than Tarantino’s previous works – arguably into even more thematically productive grounds.

Tarantino’s take on the Western is a linear story for perhaps the first time in his career as a director, and is arguably inspired more by the non-American Spaghetti Westerns of the 60s than the classic American Westerns that helped to build Hollywood – Ennio Morricone score and all.

Leonardo DiCaprio forms a superbly despicable double act with Samuel L. Jackson, and Christoph Waltz’s Oscar winning performance is also excellent, proving the German is as talented at playing a hero as he was playing the villainous Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds.

Django’s longer run time of almost three hours may turn some viewers off, but it prides itself as another strong and bloody entry in the Tarantino hall of fame; a very close 2nd to the most iconic and monumental release of the filmmaker’s storied career.

1. Pulp Fiction (1994)

If you’ve ever seen a Tarantino movie, it’s likely to be this one.

Pulp Fiction was a hit right out of the box, making a profit of $205.4 million upon release and going on to become one of the highest rated and most beloved films of all time.

Pulp Fiction has made a huge contribution to the world of popular culture, with its recognisable writing, quotes, comedy and action scenes, as well as the endless amount of John Travolta memes.

Travolta, along with Samuel L. Jackson, found his groove as a part of Tarantino’s Dynamic Duo, with Uma Thurman joining them as an iconic female action hero. The rest of the ensemble, including the likes of Bruce Willis (in his prime) and Tarantino mainstay Tim Roth, make for an exciting non-linear narrative that follows many different paths before meeting at one explosive moment.

Pulp Fiction is an undeniable classic, and absolutely the place to start when revisiting Tarantino’s catalogue. If you’ve never seen a Tarantino film, then this is the one to watch first.
