This coming week sees the release of what is likely to be one of the biggest films of the year as we build up to the final instalment of the Star Wars Skywalker Saga with Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker.
Midnight screenings will be taking place at cinemas up and down the country on Wednesday (18th December) as Star Wars fans unite to see the fate of their favourite characters.
Starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Anthony Daniels, as well as the new generation of stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Driver, Rise of Skywalker is predicted to break box office records for the UK. Could this mean a change in the top 5 highest-grossing films of 2019?
Top 5 highest grossing films of the worldwide box office 2019 to date:
1. Avengers: Endgame (Walt Disney Studios) – 25th April 2019 – $2,797,800,564

The penultimate week of the year means only one thing; blockbusters!
Over the Christmas period the UK is going to see some huge film releases.
Cats, director Tom Hooper’s latest broadway musical turned Hollywood blockbuster, is due to be released to UK audiences on December 20th, just in time for the holiday season. In a new plot written specifically for the film adaptation, we will follow a star studded cast as a group of Jellicle cats find their way to a new life. Featuring the likes of James Corden, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson and many more, this musical seems a sure hit for the UK box office.
Also getting a December 20th release is Gary Oldman’s new action/thriller, The Courier, telling the story of a London cyclist working as a courier who realises the package she is carrying is actually an explosive device.

Once all the turkey has been eaten and we can’t face another mince pie, Boxing Day comes around and brings 3 great movies to UK cinemas…
From the studio that brought us Ice Age, Tom Holland and Will Smith provide the voices for Walter and Lance in Spies in Disguise. “When the world’s greatest spy gets turned into a pigeon by an evil genius, only a tech savvy teenager can save the day.”
For the slightly more classical fans, Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated remake of Little Women will finally be gracing the big screen on Boxing Day as well. Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson and Eliza Scanlan lead the star studded cast with support from Timothee Chalamet, Meryl Streep and Laura Dern. Telling the age old story of the March sisters as they come of age in post Civil War America, Little Women is sure to warm our hearts and undoubtably be a roaring success.
Playing with Fire is the final release for Boxing Day 2019; a family comedy telling the story of a crew of firefighters who are faced with their biggest challenge yet when trying to rescue three troublesome children. John Cena stars alongside Keegan Micheal-Key in this should-be hilarious comedy for the whole family to enjoy.
Our box office update isn’t going to be back until the new year, but fear not as January is shaping up to be an exciting month for cinema releases, kicking off with Taika Waititi’s Nazi Germany based comedy, Jojo Rabbit, and Guy Ritchie’s star studded action, The Gentlemen, both opening on January 1st. If these two are anything to go by, 2020 should be an exciting year for the UK box office!
