5. Armand – Interview with the Vampire (1994)
Armand (Antonio Banderas) is not in Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire for very long, but he sure makes an impression. When Louis (Brad Pitt) and Claudia (Kirsten Dunst) travel to Europe to uncover the origins of their creation, they find Armand along with his frightful, murderous band of vaudeville vampires.
Armand is sophisticated and mannerly, his nails claw-like. His raven black hair is long and sleek and his eyes golden amber. His court of vampires is vast and he is their king. When Armand appears on stage wearing a red velvet cape and undresses a frightened young woman, it’s Louis his gaze falls to. It’s a seduction that Louis and the rest of us just barely manage to resist.
4. Queen Akasha – Queen of the Damned (2002)
Released in 2002 and based on the third novel in Anne Rice’s vampire chronicles series, Queen of the Damned takes place in the modern day. Lestat (Stuart Townsend) awakens from his tomb to the sweet sounds of the electric guitar and transforms himself from an 18th century nobleman into a moody rock God of the 21st. Though Lestat struts around in leather pants, his torso chiselled, eyes rimmed with shadow, it’s Aaliyah’s Akasha, Vampire Queen, who is the true star of the show.
When she is awakened by Lestat’s music, Akasha wanders into a vampire bar. Her costume is ornate and jewelled, glittering under the low lights. She sways her hips sensually, her movements sharp and snakelike. When Akasha learns of their plans to murder Lestat, she rips out a vampire’s beating heart and eats it. She smiles, her lips dripping with blood. Akasha is as powerful as she is sexy. It’s easy to see why Lestat would kill to be her king. Wouldn’t you?
3. David Powers – The Lost Boys (1987)
In Joel Schumacher’s 1987 horror comedy The Lost Boys, Kiefer Sutherland plays David Powers, the leader of a teen biker gang who also happen to be vampires, praying on innocent beach goers in Santa Clara, California. When Michael and his brother arrive in town after their mother’s divorce, and Michael becomes involved with David’s girlfriend, David attempts to make Michael a member of their undead club.
When he first appears on screen, David is wearing his signature black floor-length coat. He wears gloves, even though it’s the middle of summer. His hair is bleached blond, chopped into a mullet, and his ear is pierced, a cigarette tucked behind it. David is the bad boy everyone warns you about, the kind of guy who couldn’t care less, but you keep going back to him anyway.
