4. Home Sweet Home Alone (2021)

Home Sweet Home Alone Review

Disney’s reboot of Fox’s surprise Christmas hit franchise was hardly the blow-away success that fans of the original two films would have wished for, but at least it wasn’t the straight-to-video nonsense Fox pushed out during the first two decades of the 2000s.

Starring arguably the most reputable cast of any Home Alone film, and written for the screen by SNL writers, Home Sweet Home Alone probably should have offered more in terms of physical gags and quippy improvisation. Ultimately, it was another relatively hollow take on the Home Alone concept, and one that seemed to forget that the true staying power of the original film was always the Christmas spirit that lingered behind the action set pieces.

Sometimes Christmas only needs to feel Christmassy, and despite all the snow and lights and gifts, Home Sweet Home Alone felt cheap and absent of heart, ultimately proving that Home Alone is more than the sum of its parts, just as Christmas always has been.

3. Home Alone 3 (1997)

Home Alone 3 Movie

Home Alone 3 was far from as good as the first few films, and it did feature an entirely new cast of characters and actors. But, if you were to judge it as a standalone holiday movie for kids, it was fine.

Written by the same John Hughes who wrote Home Alone 1 2Home Alone 3 featured glimmers of the heart that went into the original films, though many of the creative (and somewhat ludicrous) set pieces devised for the original films seems to have been sorely missing for this Raja Gosnell (Never Been Kissed; Scooby-Doo; The Smurfs) directed entry.

Nevertheless, this movie is a huge step up from the three on this list so far, and even if it doesn’t feature the same level of creativity and sophistication as Home Alone 1 2, it does have enough about it to keep you interested, including an appearance from a very young Scarlett Johansson.

Home Alone 1 is definitely the best one. I’ve been watching them since the day I was born and still love it.
