The nominees for the 81st Golden Globe Awards were announced on Monday 11th December, with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie the most-nominated of the films chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Warner Bros’ Barbie was nominated across 7 categories, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, Lead Actress and Supporting Actor, with 3 nominations in the Original Song category for “Dance the Night Away”, “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?”.

Justine Triet’s multi-time European Film Awards winner and the recipient of the 2023 Cannes Palme d’Or, Anatomy of a Fall, was nominated in both the Best Motion Picture – Drama category as well as the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language category, as was Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest. The latter was also nominated in the Best Original Score – Motion Picture category alongside The Boy and the Heron, which is a leading name in the Best Motion Picture – Animated category beside Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The 2024 Golden Globes will take place on 7th January 2024, and will be broadcast in the CBS in the US and in the UK on Paramount+.

The winners of the 2023 European Film Awards were announced live from Berlin, Germany on Saturday 9th December, with Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall receiving a number of major accolades, including Best European Film.

The European Film Academy announced 11 different films from as many as 10 different countries as winners across a wide range of categories, whilst also honouring a number of individuals for their contributions to the form. English actress Vanessa Redgrave was honoured with the European Lifetime Achievement award, with Spanish film director Isabel Coixet being rewarded for European Achievement in World Cinema.

Anatomy of a Fall was the most celebrated of the stacked line-up of films, winning the award for Best European Film over fellow nominees Fallen Leaves, Green Border, Me Captain and The Zone of Interest, as well as picking up awards for European Director, European Screenwriter, European Editing, and European Actress, the latter of which was won by Sandra Hüller who was nominated twice in the category for Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest.

The awards ceremony was streamed live and in full via the European Film Awards website, with replays still available.

The winners of the 2023 British Independent Film Awards were announced live from Old Billingsgate, London on Sunday 3rd December 2023, with Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers earning the Best British Independent Film award on a successful night for the relationship drama.

In a ceremony hosted by Kiell Smith-Bynoe and Lolly Adefope, All of Us Strangers took home British Independent Film Awards for Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Music Supervision and Best Editing, with 2023 Oscar nominee Paul Mescal (Aftersun) being named the joint winner for Best Supporting Performance for his part in the film.

Justine Triet’s 2023 Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall was awarded the title of Best International Independent Film, earning the accolade over competing titles Fallen Leaves, Fremont, Monster and Past Lives.

Mia McKenna-Bruce won the award for Best Lead Performance for her part in How to Have Sex, with casting director Isabella Odoffin also earning an accolade for Best Casting.

The European Film Academy has revealed its nominees for the 36th European Film Awards (EFAs), with Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest and Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall being celebrated across most categories.

Justine Triet’s Cannes Palme d’Or-winning thriller, Anatomy of a Fall, is nominated across four categories: European Film, Directing, Lead Actress (Sandra Hüller), Screenwriting. Glazer’s The Zone of Interest has been nominated across the five leading categories: European Film, Directing, Lead Actress (Sandra Hüller), Lead Actor (Christian Friedel), Screenwriting.

British actors Josh O’Connor and Mia McKenna-Bruce were nominated in the acting categories, with the former playing the lead role in Alice Rohrwacher’s drama La Chimera and the latter being the focus of Molly Manning Walker’s acclaimed debut How to Have Sex (itself nominated for 13 British Independent Film Awards).

Aki Kaurismäki’s Finnish drama Fallen Leaves was also nominated across all five eligible categories announced.

The 2023 European Film Awards will take place live from Berlin, Germany on 9th December 2023.

The British Independent Film Awards announced on 2nd November 2023 the nominees for their latest annual awards show, with debut features Rye Lane and Scrapper leading the list of nominated films.

Announced via an event hosted by Susan Wokoma and Morfydd Clark at One Hundred Shoreditch, London, the nominees for what BIFA consider to be the most outstanding British independent films of 2023 were revealed.

Overall, 26 British feature films were included, with Raine Allen Miller’s Rye Lane earning 16 nominations and Charlotte Regan’s Scrapper earning 14. Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers, starring Paul Mescal, Andrew Scott, Claire Foy and Jamie Bell, also earned 14 nominations, with Molly Manning Walker’s How to Have Sex earning 13 in total. Other success stories were Femme (11 nominations) and The End We Start From (9 nominations).

Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall was nominated for Best International Feature Film, as was festival favourite Past Lives, while heavyweights Tilda Swinton, Andrew Scott and Jodie Comer are among those nominated in the Best Lead Performance category.

The Golden Globes, known historically for being one of the leading ceremonies of awards season, has announced two new awards for their upcoming January 2024 show.

The first of the new awards is the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. The Golden Globes website states that this award nominates those films that are the ‘highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience support and attained cinematic excellence.’

In order to be eligible, films must have grossed a minimum of $150million in their theatrical run. $100million of that total must have come from the domestic (United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico) box office. Streaming films will be considered based on viewership data acquired by recognised industry sources. Eight films can be nominated, and their inclusion in this category will not rule out their eligibility in other categories such as Best Motion Picture and Best Animated Film.

Tim Gray, Golden Globes Executive Vice President, expressed his desire to rectify attitudes towards awards season, stating that “these films have typically not been recognized among industry awards, but they should be.”

This decision is reminiscent of the proposed Oscar for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film put forward by the Academy Awards in 2018. This announcement was met with criticism due to a lack of clarity regarding what it was actually awarding and for potentially diminishing a blockbuster’s chance at a Best Picture nomination. A month after its announcement, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences retracted their decision and nothing has been heard of the award since. It will be interesting to see how the Golden Globes version of this award is handled and if the organisation will commit to it in future ceremonies.

The second of the new Golden Globe awards is the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television. This award will celebrate achievements in traditional stand-up comedy from broadcast, cable, and streaming – so long as the project has a recognised distributor. A total of six nominees will be chosen in this category.

These announcements come following criticism of the Golden Globes over the past few years, directed at their former parent company The Hollywood Foreign Press Association. In 2021, most of the criticism addressed a lack of diversity in the voting body, which hadn’t seen a black person join since 2002. This resulted in the 79th Golden Globe Awards being widely boycotted, with US broadcaster NBC refusing to broadcast it. The decision to promote more populist films through the new award could be the organisation’s attempt at repairing their relationship and reputation with filmgoing audiences.

The most recent ceremony saw Martin McDonough’s The Banshees of Inisherin be rewarded as the biggest winner of the night, picking up three awards including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Steven Spielberg‘s semi-autobiographical love letter to film, The Fabelmans, was awarded Best Motion Picture – Drama, with Spielberg himself earning the award for Best Director.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will take place on Sunday, 7th January 2024.

After months of casting reports and rumours, writer-director James Gunn has finally chosen his Superman and Lois for his next feature, Superman: Legacy.

David Corenswet will take on the role of Superman/Clark Kent. Corenswet recently starred opposite Mia Goth in the critically acclaimed Pearl, and played the lead role in Ryan Murphy’s miniseries, ‘Hollywood’. Corenswet will replace Henry Cavill, who portrayed the iconic character for close to a decade, starting with Man of Steel in 2013.

Rachel Brosnahan has been cast as Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane. She is perhaps best known for her leading role in the Amazon Prime series ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’. Her performance as the titular Mrs. Maisel was unanimously praised, garnering her an Emmy and two Golden Globes. Prior to this, Brosnahan appeared on ‘House of Cards’, which Corenswet also appeared in briefly, though the two did not share a scene. Brosnahan follows in a lineage of big and small screen Lois Lanes that includes Margot Kidder, Teri Hatcher, Kate Bosworth and most recently Amy Adams.

Reports indicate that final auditions took place over the weekend with stars such as ‘Sex Education’ lead Emma Mackey and Mad Max scene-stealer Nicholas Hoult also in the running. The latter also narrowly missed out on playing Batman in Matt Reeves‘ recent take on the caped crusader. While losing out on two huge roles like this will likely be frustrating for Hoult, an earlier report suggests he has also been testing for Superman’s arch nemesis Lex Luthor.

This news comes almost exactly a decade after Henry Cavill and Amy Adams made their comic book movie debuts in Man of Steel (June 2013). Each appeared in multiple DC projects over the last decade, in a shared universe that is due to end with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in December. After a series of critical and commercial failures for Warnes Bros., new DC Films figureheads James Gunn and Peter Safran will helm the rebooted cinematic universe. Gunn, who was responsible for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise under the Disney banner, has spoken publicly about his desire to ‘focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life’ than the one Henry Cavill was portraying by the end of his run.

Superman: Legacy will be released on 11th July 2025. Gunn and Safran have stated that the film will follow a young Clark Kent during his early days at the Daily Planet. The film will follow him balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his life on Earth. Gunn is directing based on a screenplay he has written himself.

The UK’s last surviving newsreel theatre, the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle upon Tyne, has launched a fundraising campaign to save it from closure.

The North East’s only full-time independent cinema, an 86-year-old cultural institution and a registered charity, faces a stark future due to a slump in post-COVID audience numbers, the cost of living crisis, public sector spending cuts, and soaring energy bills. Specifically, Tyneside Cinema is combatting a 300% hike in energy costs and a 40% downturn in post-pandemic audiences.

The living wage employer was founded by Dixon Scott, the great-uncle of famed Hollywood directors Sir Ridley Scott and Tony Scott, and serves more than 500,000 people per year across the programmes, attractions, bars and cafes, offered inside its Grade II listed building.

“Right now, we ask people who want to help us to do two things – donate to our fundraising appeal and visit us as often as you can,” said Tyneside Cinema’s interim CEO Simon Drysdale.

AN URGENT fund-raising campaign is being launched to save the iconic Tyneside Cinema from closure as it faces up to an unprecedented threat to its survival.

A combination of a post-Covid slump in audiences, the cost of living crisis, soaring energy bills and public sector funding cuts have left the 86-year-old Newcastle cultural institution facing a stark future.

Bosses warn that without additional funds and support from the public, Tyneside Cinema could face the same fate as other independent cinemas and venues around the country which have had to shut their doors for good.

Simon Drysdale, interim CEO at Tyneside Cinema, said: “This is potentially the worst funding crisis Tyneside Cinema has faced in its history.

“Whilst we made it through the pandemic and the enforced closures that brought, audiences have so far failed to return in pre-Covid numbers and, like many cultural venues around the country, we are also facing reductions in funding from public sector organisations who themselves are finding finances tight.

“There have already been closures of other long-standing cultural venues including leading independent cinema The Filmhouse in Edinburgh, the Oldham Coliseum theatre and, closer to home, The Exchange Theatre in North Shields.

“We are determined to do our utmost to ensure that Tyneside Cinema does not become another addition to that list and to preserve this iconic centre for independent film for current and future generations.

“However, in order to do that, we really need your help – and we need it soon.”

Tyneside Cinema reopened successfully after the pandemic, with support from guests, friends of the cinema, donors, Arts Council England, DCMS, Heritage Lottery Fund and the British Film Institute.

But all cinemas across the UK, from multiplexes to independent cinemas, have struggled to deal with low ticket sales following the pandemic – down by 40% on pre-pandemic levels in the case of Tyneside Cinema.

Rising utility costs have also hit hard with the cost of heating, cooling and lighting Tyneside Cinema trebling.

In addition, Tyneside Cinema building’s listed status presents its own unique challenges to maintain and adapt to the needs of modern audiences. It is in discussion with its landlord to achieve a rental that reflects the open market value of the premises rather than one that is linked to RPI (which is particularly crippling in the current environment) and leads to an unrealistic level of rent. A better rent deal would help the cinema to continue to bring the very best of independent, blockbuster, foreign language and award-winning films to audiences in the region.

In response to these various challenges, Tyneside Cinema is working closely with other UK independent cinemas to find new funding and operating models to protect the sector.

Simon Drysdale said: “As well as providing audiences with a genuine alternative to mainstream Hollywood movies, Tyneside Cinema and cinemas like it are a vital part of the UK film industry, championing the work of the new and up and coming film makers and supporting local talent.

“It is particularly fitting that Tyneside Cinema was founded by Dixon Scott, the great-uncle of stellar film directors Sir Ridley and Tony Scott.

“Preserving and building on that unique history is one of the driving forces behind our campaign to keep Tyneside Cinema alive.

“We are doing all we can to keep the cinema open and we are determined to save this vital and unique institution that people of Newcastle and the North East are so rightfully proud of.”

The trustees have already put in place a number of initiatives to help improve Tyneside Cinema’s financial picture, including changing operating hours and restructuring ticket pricing.

Following a review of staff costs, the cinema is also now considering restructuring its workforce and is entering into consultation with staff members about the potential for a small number of potential redundancies.

Mr Drysdale explained: “Losing colleagues is the last thing we want to do, but the economic climate, combined with low visitor numbers means we have little choice.

“By breathing in for a while we can weather the storm and we hope that, in the future, we will again be able to offer the full series of community and arts work we have been famous for.”

Tyneside’s operations were comprehensively overhauled three years ago following an independent investigation which was prompted by issues raised by staff at that time. Following the review, a new chair, board of trustees and senior management team were appointed.

Mr Drysdale said: “We acknowledge the mistakes identified by the independent investigation three years ago, but this is very much a new era for Tyneside Cinema and it is a time when we need the support of the fantastic North East public more than ever before.”

Tyneside Cinema is hoping that its rallying call to the region’s film lovers will help to secure its future and ensure that the final curtain doesn’t fall on this iconic cultural venue.

The Cannes International Film Festival will premiere new films from influential British filmmakers Jonathan Glazer and Ken Loach, as well as Japanese Palme d’Or winner Hirokazu Kore-eda, as part of its 2023 festival line-up.

Announced by general delegate Thierry Frémaux and incoming president Iris Knobloch during a press conference from Paris, France on Thursday 13th April, the 2023 Cannes International Film Festival will also debut new films from Todd Haynes, Wes Anderson and Wim Wenders.

Of the films listed to be in competition at the festival, six have been directed by women. This is a new record. Press and visitors can expect new films from former Palme d’Or-nominated directors Alice Rohrwacher (Happy as Lazzaro) and Jessica Hausner (Little Joe) among others.

The opening film of the festival will be Jeanne du Barry from French actress and director Maïwenn, about the last official mistress of Louis XV (set to be played by Johnny Depp).

Jeanne du Barry will be presented out of competition alongside Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Kim Jee-won’s Cobweb, Sam Levinson’s The Idol, and James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

There will also be a special screening of the latest film from British filmmaker Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), Occupied City, a documentary about life in Amsterdam, Netherlands during the Nazi occupation of World War II.

The debut of Jonathan Glazer’s adaptation of Martin Amis’ “The Zone of Interest” will mark the first feature release by the Sexy Beast director since 2013’s critically-acclaimed Under the Skin. The Zone of Interest tells of a Nazi officer falling in love with the wife of the commander of the Auschwitz concentration camp and will star Toni Erdmann’s Sandra Hüller.

Meanwhile, Kes director Ken Loach will debut his first film since before to the pandemic. The British filmmaker, last at Cannes with Sorry We Missed You, directed Palme d’Or winners The Wind that Shakes the Barley (2006) and I, Daniel Blake (2016). His latest film, The Old Oak, will see him reunite with screenwriter Paul Laverty to tell of the tensions between UK immigrants and the small north east village they are housed in.

Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose films have been nominated for the Palme d’Or six times, is another former Palme d’Or winner (Shoplifters) returning to the south of France in 2023. Kore-eda’s latest film, Monster, is currently being kept top secret, though it will reunite the Japanese director with his Shoplifters star Sakura Ando.

The only other Palme d’Or winner to return in 2023 will be Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan, whose film Winter Sleep won the prestigious award in 2014. Ceylan also won Best Director at Cannes in 2008 for Winter Sleep.

The 2023 Cannes International Film Festival will take place 16-27 May, 2023.

Steven Knight, creator of the hit BBC drama ‘Peaky Blinders’, will script an upcoming yet-to-be-revealed Star Wars film.

This news, as reported in Variety, follows the development from 21st March that the previous screenwriter on the project, Damon Lindelof (Prometheus, Star Trek: Into Darkness), will no longer work on the movie.

Lindelof, best known for co-creating ‘Lost’ and HBO’s ‘Watchmen’, had reportedly been working on a script since at least October 2022. He co-wrote a story with Justin Britt-Gibson (‘Counterpart’), who also departed the project.

Outside of ‘Peaky Blinders’, British screenwriter Steven Knight might be best known for penning the Academy Award-winning script for Dirty Pretty Things, as well as Locke and, more recently, Spencer. The quick turnaround on bringing Knight in implies that Lucasfilm are eager to get this film made, as Star Wars has been absent from the silver screen since 2019’s divisive Skywalker Saga conclusion The Rise of Skywalker.

The currently untitled film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. No plot details are known but the film is believed to be set after The Rise of Skywalker. Obaid-Chinoy is a two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker for her documentary work. More recently, she directed two episodes of ‘Ms. Marvel’ for Disney Plus.

It is unclear whether Knight will build on Lindelof’s existing script or start an entirely new treatment. Knight will have a busy schedule on his hands, as he is reportedly also penning a Vertigo remake with Robert Downey Jr. eyeing the leading role.

This shakeup follows a pattern at Lucasfilm, who have seen multiple directors leave projects, like Phil Lord and Christopher Miller who departed Solo, and had some films cancelled altogether, such as Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron and an untitled project that was to be produced by Marvel Cinematic Universe head Kevin Feige.

In other galactic news, Star Wars Celebration 2023 is fast approaching, taking place from 7-10 April in London. Fans can expect plenty of announcements regarding their film and TV slate, including possible details on the Obaid-Chinoy/Knight feature.
