10 Best Films of All Time: Emi Grant

8. Clueless (1995)

Clueless is one stepbrother away from being the perfect movie.

Cher (Alicia Silverstone) still serves as a style icon for teenagers and young adults alike. From her matching yellow set to her bodycon PE uniform, she elevates the high school teen romance genre to the next level.

The phrase “as if”, and the sentence “you’re a virgin who can’t drive”, are still some of the best pieces of dialogue ever performed on screen.

Nobody does a makeover quite like Cher and no other movie does Shakespearian teen love quite like Clueless.

7. Lady Bird (2017)

Lady Bird Review

Even if you’ve never driven over a bridge in Sacramento at sunset, if you’ve watched Ladybird, it feels close enough.

For those of us lucky enough to graduate high school the year this film came out, it felt like a perfect end to adolescence. We watched our messy, fun, crazy childhoods get wrapped up in a bow and presented in a plaid skirt and an arm cast.

Ladybird is as funny as it is poignant. The unstoppable team of Saoirse Ronan, Greta Gerwig, and Timothée Chalamet has yet to be reckoned with in the coming-of-age genre.

6. Get Out (2017)

Get Out Review

Spoiler alert: Get Out still holds the title of best plot twist of all time.

Besides the fact that the film operates as a spine-chilling horror with some comedy spice from our favorite comedian turned writer/director Jordan Peele, Get Out will be used as race theory for years to come.

Peele introduces the “sunken place” seamlessly into the lexicon and has something fresh to say about White liberals in post-Obama America. Even with the contributions made to social justice circles, Peele stays true to the essentials of a horror classic.
