Portrait of a Lady on Fire sees Céline Sciamma truly come into her own as a director. The film is light-years ahead of her previous features, but stays true to the essence of her films; that being the exploration of the female experience.
It’s a film summed up perfectly by Andy Samberg, who said: “You get lulled into this amazing space of there being no men for a long time in the movie, and then a man appears and you think ‘Ugh, what’s this guy doing here?’ Get him out of here. He’s ruining the vibe”.
Every single scene looks like an oil painting, and this is why you may recognise every frame from Twitter. The film is slow in the best way possible, taking time to develop relationships and letting natural chemistry become fully realised.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire works on so many levels. It can be viewed as a love story that is beautiful to look at, but also a commentary on the male gaze without feeling like a university lecture.
