These awards aim to celebrate blockbuster films and stand-up comedy. Report by George Taylor.

The post Golden Globes Adds Two New Awards first appeared on The Film Magazine.]]>

The Golden Globes, known historically for being one of the leading ceremonies of awards season, has announced two new awards for their upcoming January 2024 show.

The first of the new awards is the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. The Golden Globes website states that this award nominates those films that are the ‘highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience support and attained cinematic excellence.’

In order to be eligible, films must have grossed a minimum of $150million in their theatrical run. $100million of that total must have come from the domestic (United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico) box office. Streaming films will be considered based on viewership data acquired by recognised industry sources. Eight films can be nominated, and their inclusion in this category will not rule out their eligibility in other categories such as Best Motion Picture and Best Animated Film.

Tim Gray, Golden Globes Executive Vice President, expressed his desire to rectify attitudes towards awards season, stating that “these films have typically not been recognized among industry awards, but they should be.”

This decision is reminiscent of the proposed Oscar for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film put forward by the Academy Awards in 2018. This announcement was met with criticism due to a lack of clarity regarding what it was actually awarding and for potentially diminishing a blockbuster’s chance at a Best Picture nomination. A month after its announcement, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences retracted their decision and nothing has been heard of the award since. It will be interesting to see how the Golden Globes version of this award is handled and if the organisation will commit to it in future ceremonies.

The second of the new Golden Globe awards is the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television. This award will celebrate achievements in traditional stand-up comedy from broadcast, cable, and streaming – so long as the project has a recognised distributor. A total of six nominees will be chosen in this category.

These announcements come following criticism of the Golden Globes over the past few years, directed at their former parent company The Hollywood Foreign Press Association. In 2021, most of the criticism addressed a lack of diversity in the voting body, which hadn’t seen a black person join since 2002. This resulted in the 79th Golden Globe Awards being widely boycotted, with US broadcaster NBC refusing to broadcast it. The decision to promote more populist films through the new award could be the organisation’s attempt at repairing their relationship and reputation with filmgoing audiences.

The most recent ceremony saw Martin McDonough’s The Banshees of Inisherin be rewarded as the biggest winner of the night, picking up three awards including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Steven Spielberg‘s semi-autobiographical love letter to film, The Fabelmans, was awarded Best Motion Picture – Drama, with Spielberg himself earning the award for Best Director.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will take place on Sunday, 7th January 2024.

The post 2022 Golden Globes – Film Nominees first appeared on The Film Magazine.]]>
The nominees for the 79th annual Golden Globes were announced Monday 13th December 2021 by newly elected Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) president Helen Hoehne and rapper Snoop Dogg.

The ceremony will seemingly go ahead, despite TV network NBC dropping it from their schedule. This decision followed a controversial report about the awards that revealed that there were no black people included in the 87 members of the HFPA. This is the body of journalists that vote at the awards. This shocking lack of diversity resulted in many celebrities shunning the show, including Tom Cruise who handed back his three Golden Globes.

Additionally, a report by the L.A. Times implied corruption within the association and suggested that voters were often bribed by production companies. The example given was when voters were flown to Paris by Netflix to coincide with the release of the streaming service’s series ‘Emily in Paris’Despite the show’s mixed reviews, ‘Emily in Paris’ received two nominations including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Following the controversy, the HFPA have recruited 21 new members that are predominately diverse and made its existing members take diversity and equality training. A chief diversity officer has been appointed in addition to a partnership with National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to ensure an awards ceremony more representative of the diverse talent that makes up the film industry.

Typically the Golden Globes mark the beginning of awards season, being the second biggest ceremony behind the Oscars. However, it remains to be seen what impact the upcoming event will have with no network to air on and likely little fanfare from the nominated talent.

The nominations themselves seek to highlight the top films of the year. The most nominated films for the 2022 ceremony are Sir Kenneth Branagh’s drama Belfast and Jane Campion’s gripping western The Power of the Dog. Both films are nominated for 7 awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director. Belfast has already picked up some significant awards including the People’s Choice Award at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. The Power of The Dog meanwhile continues Netflix’s trend of releasing award show juggernauts, with previous efforts including The Irishman and Roma.

Behind these two are the star-studded Don’t Look Up, Will Smith vehicle King Richard, Paul Thomas Anderson’s love letter to 1970s L.A., Licorice Pizza, and Steven Spielberg’s first ever musical, West Side StoryEach have been nominated for 4 awards.

The post 78th Golden Globes – 2021 Film Winners first appeared on The Film Magazine.]]>
The 78th annual Golden Globes were held today, 28th February 2021, with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) choosing the best of 2020/21’s cinema and television.

In a ceremony hosted simultaneously from New York City and Los Angeles by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the delayed 2021 Golden Globes took on a unique, socially distanced look for the first time, with awards announced in a socially distanced studio setting and presented to the winners via live video call.

In film, 15 awards were handed to the best of the best in their respective categories, with the headline winners being the recently deceased Chadwick Boseman in the Best Actor – Drama category and Chloé Zhao, who became just the 2nd woman to ever win the Best Director Golden Globe. There was also a celebration of the life, career and contributions to cinema and television of Jane Fonda, who was awarded the Cecile B. deMille (lifetime achievement) award for contributions across 7 decades.

The HFPA had been the source of much controversy in the build-up to the awards after it was revealed that the association of 87 “foreign” (to the United States) journalists did not have one single black member. In addition, reports from the LA Times suggested that some members of the association were flown to Paris by Netflix and received payments in the region of $2million from the streaming giants ahead of the Globes’ surprise nominations for ‘Emily in Paris’ in the television categories. In one segment, Association members took to stage to recognise they had done wrong and promised to change.

News story by George Taylor.

The post Michael Fassbender in Talks to Star in David Fincher Assassin Thriller first appeared on The Film Magazine.]]>

Michael Fassbender in X-Men: First Class (2011).

Much like Magneto and metal, Michael Fassbender has no problem attracting big name directors. Having already worked with Quentin Tarantino, Ridley Scott and Steve McQueen, the Irish actor could soon be adding David Fincher to his list. Fassbender is currently in talks to star in assassin thriller The Killer, according to The Hollywood ReporterThe film is being made for Netflix and is expected to begin filming in September.

The Killer will be Fincher’s second feature length film in collaboration with the streaming service. The first was last year’s Mank, a biopic following Citizen Kane writer Herman J Mankiewicz. Sam Sewell-Peterson in his review for The Film Magazine described it as ‘a technical triumph with a towering turn from [Gary] Oldman’. Its critical praise from multiple outlets has no doubt secured the film numerous award nominations, including Best Motion Picture, Best Director and Best Actor at the 2021 Golden Globes.

In November 2020, Fincher announced he had signed a deal at Netflix for another four years at least. This came off the back of his previous efforts with them, including executive producing successful series ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Mindhunter’. It seems for now that Netflix is the perfect home for the director.

The Killer will reunite Fincher with Andrew Kevin Walker, who wrote the screenplay for Se7en and was an uncredited script doctor for Fight Club. Both are some of Fincher’s most popular films from his early days, so that news will likely excite long time fans who have been less-enthused by the director’s more recent efforts.

The story for this new film will be based on a French graphic novel of the same name, written by Matz with art by Luc Jacamon.

According to THR, Fassbender would play the lead character, an unnamed assassin ‘who begins to psychologically crack as he develops a conscience, even while his clients continue to demand his skills.’ Fassbender is known for his cold blooded portrayal of Magneto in the X-Men franchise and played an assassin in the ill-fated Assassin’s Creed adaptation, so he seems like a good fit for this role. This will follow a recent slew of box office duds and critical failures for the actor, including The Snowman, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Alien: CovenantHopefully this and the recently wrapped Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) feature, Next Goal Wins, will see a resurgence of success for him.

No release date is known, but if filming is expected to commence in September then it will likely hit screens sometime in 2022.

A deal announced on 23rd September calls for Penske Media Corp and MRC to form new content and publishing ventures. The new organisation will be known as PMRC. The deal was made effective as soon as it was announced and will see a transition period through the end of 2020.

The first joint venture will see the formation of PMRC as PMC takes over the daily operations of a range of outlets. PMC is the parent company of Variety, Deadline and IndieWirethree of the leading publications in the film industry. PMC also owns Rolling Stone and Music Business Worldwide. MRC holds ownership over The Hollywood Reporter as well as Billboard and Vibe. These outlets will now be run under the same banner.

Jay Penske, PMC chief executive, says, “These are all brands I’ve long admired. Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, and Vibe have created some of the finest content in their respective industries and have contributed immensely to the heightened quality of journalism covering entertainment and music today. We feel very fortunate for this valuable partnership with the exceptional MRC team and the opportunity to continue the legacy of these tremendous brands for the next many decades.”

The second joint venture concerns content production and calls for MRC to create new content based on the intellectual properties now shared by PMRC. This will range from film to television, live shows and more. MRC already own Dick Clark Productions who run many awards shows such as the Golden Globes and Billboard Music Awards. MRC have also had a range of successful film releases, including Baby Driver, Knives Out and Hotel Transylvania 3. The 76th Golden Globes were held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, USA on Sunday 6th Jan 2019 and hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, with Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody finding huge success with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and a memorable acceptance speech from Christian Bale headlining in the aftermath.

As seems to be typical each year given the distinction the Association places between Drama and Musical/Comedy in the main categories, there was controversy surrounding the nominees for this year’s awards, especially regarding Green Book being considered a Comedy/Musical and Bohemian Rhapsody being considered a drama. Each film then won their respective Best Picture categories, earning yet more division across the vocal audiences of film critics social media users alike.

Away from the competitive awards, Jeff Bridges earned the Association’s Cecil B. Demille award (given to those who have “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”) and was typically humble and relaxed during his acceptance speech.
