6. Kong: Skull Island (2017)
The reboot of the Godzilla and King Kong franchises delivered the action-packed Kong: Skull Island as its second instalment. Starring alongside Tom Hiddleston and Captain Marvel co-star Samuel L. Jackson, Larson played Mason Weaver, an investigative journalist and anti-war photographer. The chemistry with her co-stars is fun and typical of a MonsterVerse movie, and while the film offers little by the way of showcasing Larson’s talent, it is exciting and frightening, and could be seen as a warm-up to Captain Marvel.
7. The Gambler (2014)
This remake of the 1974 film of the same name sees Brie Larson in the lead female role next to Mark Wahlberg, who plays a literature professor with a gambling addiction. Larson is a student who takes an interest in him, supporting him through his turmoil, and offers some of the depth associated with her career thus far. Since its release, the film has received mixed reviews, but its performances have been acclaimed.
8. Tanner Hall (2011)
Tanner Hall is a female-fronted and female-directed coming-of-age drama with Rooney Mara in the lead role. The film follows four girls’ lives in a boarding school, Larson playing one of Mara’s supporting characters. Think of it as a simmered-down St Trinian’s. It was well received at the Hamptons International Film Festival and was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature at the Gen Art Film Festival. This film presents Larson a little differently from how she would come to be seen in the years following, making for an interesting watch.
9. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2010)
Ah, the classic that is Scott Pilgrim. It may not float everyone’s boat, but it is a timeless geeky movie. Brie Larson has a small part in this film as Envy Adams, Scott’s ex-girlfriend. It’s likely that you’ll have witnessed the iconic ‘Clash at Demonhead’ scene where Larson performs with her band. If you haven’t seen it, you have definitely heard the song. Although this was a small part for Larson, it did bring her to the attention of a wider audience.
10. Free Fire (2016)
Directed by Ben Wheatley (Sightseers; High Rise), Free Fire is an action-comedy film with a whole host of famous faces including Cillian Murphy and Armie Hammer. Set almost entirely in a warehouse, this film is pretty much one big shootout between two parties, with Larson’s character Justine at the centre of the conflict. Although ridiculous and comedic, we see Larson portraying a strong female character with enough nerve to hold her own. In the evolution of Larson’s career, this performance is perhaps the transitory period between comedy and action, between 21 Jump Street/Scott Pilgrim and Kong: Skull Island/Captain Marvel.
